Archaeologists Dig For Lost Gravesites in Clearwater

CLEARWATER -- In Clearwater, engineers and archaeologists are working in the ground at the location of a historic black cemetery.

An engineering firm is working at two locations on the property of a south Missouri Avenue business in Clearwater, that was the site of St Matthew's Baptist Church cemetery between 1909 and 1955. If the excavation reveals any human remains, work will cease immediately.

A year ago, ground penetrating radar found about 70 potential graves. The city says it will give updates if the crews find anything.

Over the past two years, researchers have rediscovered several lost graveyards in the Tampa Bay area. where the remains of black residents buried in the Jim Crow era could be found.
