Blue-green algae plaguing Florida's waterways is being blamed for the death of a family dog.

An algal bloom in the C-51 canal in West Palm Beach sparked a recent health alert, with the Florida Department of Health saying the toxins from the algae can be harmful to humans and potential deadly to pets.

That's believed to be what killed an eight-year old boxer named Bella, after she ate something from the canal that wound up on her owner's boat.

Scientists confirm the dog had ingested toxins consistent with the algae and died several days later.

Pet owners who have been around water are being advised to let their veterinarian know if their dog gets sick, especially with an upset stomach.
