Democrats in Florida are pushing for abortion bills in Tallahassee to be defeated.

Congresswoman Lois Frankel of West Palm Beach hosted a virtual press conference Friday, the eve of the 49th anniversary of Roe versus Wade.

"Here in the state which our governor says is the freest state in the country, that's an oxymoron because we are now under blatant attack on reproductive freedom."

Frankel and state Senator Lori Berman of Boynton Beach were joined by pro-choice advocates and a representative from Planned Parenthood, who claim that Republicans are trying to pass legislation banning most abortions after 15 weeks in hopes that the U.S. Supreme Court upholds a similar Mississippi law.

Frankel says that kind of ruling would open the flood gates.

"I think that this anti-abortion movement is like a virus and every time there is a new law and a new idea we see another anti-abortion...and it's not anti-abortion, anti-freedom legislature doing a copycat."

Supporters of the proposed legislation say that a majority of abortions take place prior to 15 weeks, but Berman says there are several reasons why someone may wait to get an abortion.

"You have 14-year old girls who are in denial that they're even pregnant and so fifteen weeks happens."

She also says cites a lack of money for an abortion and COVID keeping the mother from getting healthcare as reasons a woman may have for waiting.

HB5 has passed its first committee, the Senate companion bill is waiting to be heard.

The bills provide an exception in cases where a fetus “has a fatal fetal abnormality.”
