Polk Jury Recommends Death for Double Murder Convict Waldon, 11-1

BARTOW -- A Polk County jury has recommended the death penalty for Marcelle Waldon. He was convicted last week of the murders of a Lakeland city commissioner and her husband.

The vote was 11-1. A judge will make the final call.

Florida lawmakers passed new legislation last year in response to the Nikolas Cruz verdict, requiring just eight out of twelve votes for a death sentence. Waldon's attorney tells News Channel 8 there could be an appeal based on the fact that the law required a unanimous vote when the murders were committed in November of 2020.
