More Americans have gotten abortions during the first three months of 2024 than the same period in 2023.
That's according to a new report from the Society of Family Planning.
"There was an average of 98,990 abortions each month in the first three months of 2024, according to the latest data from #WeCount, a research project from the Society of Family Planning. That’s about 14% higher than the average from the same period last year, or about 12,000 more abortions each month," according to a new report.
The trend continues since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in summer 2022, turning abortion rights back to the states.
The increase appears to be driven mostly be telehealth consultations, which account for 20-percent of all abortions nationally.
Six states have put laws into action that offer legal protections to clinicians who offer telehealth care via an abortion pill in states that have bans on abortions.
Before the shield laws began kicking in and #WeCount started tallying them, people were still getting some pills in places with bans.
One of the states where abortions increased was Florida. That changed in April, when a ban after six weeks' gestation took effect. The data doesn't yet reflect that change.
