"It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Lincoln Díaz-Balart," the family stated. Balart was a Cuban-American attorney and Republican politician who spent 18 years as a US Congressman. He is survived by his wife for 48 years, Cristina and son Daniel.
Balart also served in the Florida Senate. He retired from Congress in 2011 and his younger brother, Mario Díaz-Balart, succeeded him.

The family is planning a public memorial mass.
Senator Rick Scott issuing a statement about his colleague.
“Ann and I are heartbroken to learn of the passing of our good friend, Lincoln Díaz-Balart and send our deepest condolences and prayers to Cristina, Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart and the entire Díaz-Balart family. Lincoln made a profound impact on the lives of so many Floridians and Americans, including myself – never failing to put a smile on my face and encouraged me to continue our fight for freedom and democracy around the world. Words could never do justice to describe the legacy he has left behind, with an undeterred passion to serve and fight for those he represented and those who supported freedom and democracy in Latin America. I am forever grateful to have had a friend and role model in Lincoln, and know, that while he will be missed, his legacy will inspire generations to come.”
