- FLORIDA - Florida motorists are increasingly expressing support for causes and organizations by choosing purpose driven license plates.
According to the state highways agency nearly 2.28 million drivers had opted for specialty plates as of June 1st.
These plates feature over one hundred unique designs with annual fees directed to related charities and institutions.
The state highway safety and motor vehicles department reports that the top selling plate is the picturesque Endless Summer design followed by the Helping Sea Turtles Survive option.
College spirit plates for the University of Florida and Florida State University continue to rank high alongside professional sports themed plates such as Miami Heat and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In addition to offering over one hundred designs the program includes specialty gift certificates for gifting a plate to another vehicle owner.
Since its launch the initiative has generated millions of dollars that are channeled directly to nonprofit projects universities wildlife preservation and military support.
