I know it sounds weird. I mean...why? We don't even eat the skin. Turns out, bacteria can spread to the parts we eat.
The FDA issued a report earlier this month urging us to wash our avacados before eating or cooking with them. Listeria monocytogenes was found on 17 percent of avocado samples taken from 2014 - 2016. The bacteria was found on the skin of the avocados sampled, but 0.2 percent of avocados involved in the sampling contained flesh that also tested positive for listeria.
Better to be safe than sorry (even with organic avacados).
