As autumn deepens across the Sunshine State, health authorities are tracking an uptick in seasonal respiratory infections. With flu levels elevated and continuing to rise nationwide, South Florida seniors are facing unique challenges this season.

To help local families stay protected, Dr. Larissa Georgeon, MD, MPH, a board-certified family physician at Conviva Senior Primary Care, emphasizes that prevention and timely management are paramount to protecting our most vulnerable communities.

What to Look For

Influenza is a common respiratory virus that targets the upper and lower respiratory tracts. Unlike the gradual onset of a standard common cold, the flu manifests with a rapid, sudden onset of symptoms.

When assessing a potential respiratory illness, medical professionals look for a combination of clinical presentations, which frequently include:

A sudden, elevated body temperature accompanied by chills or feeling feverish.
A dry, hacking cough paired with severe throat inflammation and congestion.
Systemic fatigue, presenting as extreme tiredness, severe muscle or body aches, and blinding headaches.
Gastrointestinal distress, such as vomiting and diarrhea, which can occasionally accompany the respiratory symptoms.

Risks

When a patient presents with sudden respiratory symptoms, a medical provider will consider a differential diagnosis to determine the exact cause of the illness. It is vital to consult a professional rather than assuming a definitive diagnosis, as the flu shares a presentation timeline with several other viruses. The top possibilities usually considered include:

Influenza (Seasonal Flu): Currently seeing a surge, with Influenza A dominating the 2026 transmission cycle.
COVID-19: Continues to circulate alongside seasonal pathogens, causing similar systemic aches and fever.
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV): Particularly hazardous for older adults and infants, heavily impacting the lower respiratory system.

Treatment Options

If you or a loved one is diagnosed with the seasonal flu, managing the virus effectively can prevent complications such as pneumonia. Medical consensus highlights at least three primary treatment and care strategies:

Prescription Antivirals: Medications like oseltamivir (Tamiflu) can be prescribed by a physician to reduce the severity and duration of the illness if started within the first 48 hours of symptom onset.
Supportive Rest and Hydration: Allowing the immune system to recuperate while consuming plenty of water, clear broths, and electrolyte fluids to counteract fluid loss from fevers.
Over-the-Counter Symptom Relief: Utilizing fever reducers and pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, to manage body aches and lower temperatures.

Always make sure to double-check the physical label of any over-the-counter medication to confirm correct dosage, and speak directly with your primary care provider or pharmacist before introducing new supplements or drugs.
